The Bandaranike International Memorial Hall- the biggest conference secretariat in this part of Asia- will be ceremonially opened on May 17, but the Housing Ministry could not say whether the Chinese premier Chou En-lai would be here for the opening. Dr. Nath Amerekone, Secretary to the Ministry said at a press conference yesterday that the Ministry of Foreign and Internal Trade was in charge of the “opening” ceremonies. Details regarding the opening had not been finalized yet. The ceremonies will continue for three days- from May 17- 19.
Dr. Amerekone said the Foreign Affaires Ministry would announce shortly whether the Chinese Premiere would be here to participate in the ceremonies on May 17.
The ceremonial opening would be followed by a ballet by W.B. Makuloluwa titled “ Pahanen Pahane” on May 18 at the Main Hall which can accommodate 1200 guests.
Another ballet titled “ Jana Vegaya” is also likely to be staged on the opening day at the conference hall but no final decision has yet been taken.
