| 25/10/1979: BMICH as ideal convention centre |
By Nemsiri Muttukumara
Sri Lanka has been rated as the most economical and accessible convention centre in the world. This view is held by International business and industrial circles following the success of the UN sponsored Conference of Parliamentarians on Population. |
|
Pinning faith o this high international reputation the Minister of State in charge of Information and Tourism Mr. Ananda Tisse De Alwis has instructed the Tourist Board to develop the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall as a Convention centre for Asia, Arab, and Far East business and industrial entrepreneurs.
Mr. Sarath Amunugama Secretary Minister of State said already action has been taken to appoint a committee comprising of representatives from the travel trade the Tourist Board and the BMICH to put into effect the State Minister’s directive.
He said the convention centre will be similar to those existing in the Indonesian island of Ban and America’s Pacific island of Hawaii- Honolulu. Without half the facilities available in Sri Lanka climate-wise and in scenic beauty, Ball and Hawaii attract many thousands of business-cum-holiday travelers and rake millions of dollars into their kitties.
With the BMICH, the existing hotels and the projected ones, Sri Lanka will provide all the needs of the business world. Those high-spending class of business magnets and industrial tycoons are now looking for an easily accessible Asian resort to hold their business meetings, Seminars, Conferences and regional discussions. Sri Lanka is fully equipped to provide their needs in communications, secretarial facilities and interpreters plus the healthy holiday resorts.
Mr. Amunugama said without exception the high spending class looks for quick business-cum pleadsure and holiday sessions. And Sri Lanka with its salubrious climatic conditions all the year round would be the ideal destination.
The Indian Businessman and Delhi, Bombay and Madras based agencies of multi-national and international companies have found Sri Lanka cheaper for their assemblies and conventions Mr. Amunugama said.
The convention centre would be developed to make it the Asian Conference Centre for the United Nations and its specialized Agencies.
